Rådhustorget Umeå

The lighting on the Town Hall Square has been designed to scale to the different zones of the landscape to create a vital and varied space. The ambition was to provide the city's residents with different places of varying light character, all of which should feel safe and inviting in the evening. The lighting will enhance and clarify the various functions, passages and architectural qualities of the square, and inspire citizens to stop, settle down and watch or participate in the square's activities.

The square's most important single component is the Town Hall. With its symbolic placement as a fund at the southern end of the town hall plaza, its facade is a given component of the square's lighting.
To give the City Hall a visual space, the lighting on the paved surface is kept in front of low-key and well-dimmed. A larger light from both short sides of the paving, which softly decreases towards the center, provides a good balance to the room and makes the City Hall stand out clearly.
In order to contrast the larger open space in front of the City Hall, the two smaller side-lying squares are reinforced as more enclosing rooms with smaller scale.
The pedestrian zone, which constitutes the extension of Östra- and Västra Rådhusgatan, receives a functional lighting with park character, where the luminaires are placed close between the trees and allows the light to shine between the foliage.
