In central Uppsala a new form is piling up – Skandion clinic, which is the Nordic region’s first cancer clinic for treatment with protons. Seven counties are accompanied by Akademiska hus behind this unique collaborative project. Black lighting design is proud to be involved in an innovative project with both architectural solutions and in a medical perspective.
The lighting consists of both exterior and interior parts where much of the focus has been to create a light that interacts with the idea that this is not a traditional hospital building without something more. In connection with the clinic built a patient hotel with 86 double rooms. The hotel’s towering volume carries forward the plant’s identity. Its perforated sheet metal façade with lit window niches gives the building a human scale and a textile feel. A different kind of building that can affect recovery in a positive direction and example of this is the processing department’s color scheme and hotel district design with natural materials and comfortable rooms.
Exterior lighting is subtle lighting with the angled window bays and a nice light throughout the building with some hidden parts such as roof landscape and garden. It is a haven for recovering patients, but also a welcoming place for Uppsala visitors.
