Skandionkliniken

In central Uppsala a new form is piling up – Skandion clinic, which is the Nordic region’s first cancer clinic for treatment with protons. Seven counties are accompanied by Akademiska hus behind this unique collaborative project.

Black lighting design is proud to be involved in a project which breathes innovation both in terms of architectural solutions as well as from a medical perspective.

The lighting design consists of both exterior and interior segments where much of the focus has been to create an atmosphere that interacts with the idea that this is not a traditional hospital building but something much more. A 86 double room patient hotel is being built adjacent to the clinic. The hotel’s towering volume lifts the identity of the entire area. Its perforated sheet metal façade with lit window niches gives the building a human scale and a textured feel. It is a unique building that is designed to affect recovery in a positive direction. An example of this is the color scheme used in the treatment facilities as well as the hotels district design with natural materials and comfortable rooms.
The subtle exterior lighting includes lighting of the individual angled window bays as well as a soft, warm glow of the landscape and surrounding garden features. It is a haven for recovering patients, but also a welcoming place for visitors of Uppsala.
